Note: Leon Rene Marie was the tall, dark, and handsome son of a second generation New Iberia (Jean) Marie family and a first generation Hugonin family. Leon's father, Alcide, and his mother, Josephine, became estranged sometime during their marriage, and Alcide seems to have had little contact with her after joining the (Southern Pacific?) Railroad in quest of work, building the railroad from New Iberia, Louisiana, to Beaumont, Texas. The Marie family, in general, seems to have migrated with the railroad, in going from its original home in the U.S.A. to east Texas, where many descendants still live. Leon, himself, as well as his brother, Dudley, worked later for a railroad at Weeks Island, Louisiana, but not with the same company as their father. From his appointment at West Point onward, Leon seemed to live more by his wits than by a formal education.
