Note: rth registration at the probate court office in the Hardin County Courthouse, was confirmed by a story my father later told me. He made a trip to Kenton, with Grandpa, Mom, Aunt Alice, and Aunt Peggy,to attend the funeral of a young male Benner cousin, killed in an auto accident; and also for Grandpa to obtain a copy of his birth cetificate, in preparation for his retirement from the railroad. A birth certificate was unobtainable even then, because his birth was never recorded with the County. This trip was made in Dad's '39 Mercury convertible, before the War. Dad had a bottle of whiskey and kept slipping it to Grandpa across the front seat. All three girls were in the back. By the time they reached Kenton, Grandpa staggered out of the car, and nobody could figure out how he got drunk. Dad said about Grandpa,"That man could really drink a lot of whiskey". Grandpa worked for the Indiana Harbor Belt railroad,a subsidiary of the New York Central RR, was a 32nd Degree Mason, and a long-time member of the Board of Trustees for the Hammond,Indiana Water Commission. He was a Republican, but admired Franklin Delano Roosevelt.JB
