Willis Family History Excerpt - Donna Ferguson Hull, 1977 Miles Henry Willis, eldest son of Robert and Elender Willis, was born May 5, 1843, in North Carolina, and was called Henry. Victoria Elizabeth Meggs, daughter of William Meggs from North Carolina, (*11.) was born May 12, 1844, in Mississippi, and was called Elizabeth. Henry Willis and Elizabeth Meggs were married October 20, 1862, in her father�s home at Kosciuska, Attala Co., Mississippi. (*12) Their first son, William Robert, was born in Mississippi, June 13, 1866. The second child Mollie was born April 28, 1868. The third child, Alice, was born March 20, 1870, in Texas. Between the years of 1866 and 1870, Henry and Elizabeth moved to Texas. Their fourth child, Sallie, was born March 13, 1872, and their fifth child, Nannie, was born December 29, 1875. The sixth child born was a son, Henry Eliga, born January 29, 1877, at Alto, Cherokee Co., Texas. He changed his name to Lige Henry when grown and carried that name through his lifetime. A receipt for taxes for 1878, Cherokee Co., Texas, shows Henry Willis to have land six miles south of Alto. (*13.) Mollie Willis, the second child born to Henry and Elizabeth Willis, died on October 31, 1879, at the age of 11 years and 7 months. The remaining children born was: Masouria, August 31, 1880; Walter G., October 29, 1883; Annie M., December 5, 1884; and Blewford B., January 17, 1889. (*14) This made a total of ten children born to Henry and Elizabeth Willis. Henry Willis was a farmer, but he was involved in other ventures as witnessed by a contract with Coaling Camp, Cherokee Co., Texas, which was a prison. His contract was to supply butchered beef at four dollars per one hundred pounds, for the months of May, June, July, August, September, and October 1888. (*15) There evidently were more contracts with Coaling Camp as per a letter dated April 30, 1890, to M. H. Willis, from W. O. Steele, Steward, Coaling Camp, Texas, requesting 1200 pounds of beef every week. (*16) He was evidently into the lumber business for a time as he was named in lawsuit, with many others, concerning damages for the cutting of timber on land and rent on the same land. (*17) Alice Willis Saxton, third child of Henry and Elizabeth�s, died October 1, 1897. She was 27 years old. It is not known the exact year that Miles Henry Willis died, but it is believed to be approximately 1899. That would have made him an approximate 56 years old. Elizabeth and youngest son, Blewford B., lived with her son, Lige Henry Willis, until Elizabeth�s death in the approximate year of 1904. Elizabeth lived to the approximate age of 60. Blewford B., who was retarded, lived with Lige Henry and his wife, until his death, at age 17 years, in approximately 1906. The Civil War Experience of Miles Henry Willis Compiled by Robert Glen "Bob" Willis January 2000 ____________ The Experience Miles Henry Willis, the oldest son of Robert Willis and Elander Musselwhite Willis, was born May 5, 1843, in Robeson County, North Carolina. Between the years of 1843 and 1845, Robert, Elander, and Miles Henry Willis moved to Kosciusko, Attala County, Mississippi. While living on a farm in Attala County, there were 2 additional sons and 5 daughters born into this family: William H. (1845), Samuel Robert (1846), Mary A. C. (1850), Sarah (1852), Pennsylvania (1853), Missouri E. (1855), and Cedney V. (1857). During 1861 war broke out between the North and the South; Civil War had begun. Robert Willis was a member of Bethel Lodge #107, formed in Kosciusko, Attala County, MS, in 1849. In the minutes of Bethel Lodge on February 10, 1862, after the outbreak of the Civil War, the Masonic secretary transcribes resolutions in memory of Robert Willis.
