Note: Carl Strand from Terrace, Minnesota. They came to a place known as the North West Territories, later known as Saskatchewan. To get here, he hid in a cattle car. His marriage to Marie Enquist was witnessed by Tyler & Vera Roste. He homesteaded the NW 1/4 36-35-6, now known as the North Prairier District. Sold this to Otto Severson. In 1916 Axel bought the NW 21-35-6, 2 1/2 miles N of Ketchen. The mail was addressed tot the "White Hawk Post Office". He served on the "Netchie Hills School Board for several years. He had 2 threshing outfits. One was had fed & the later model was called "The Red River Special". He did threshing for many farmers in the area. Axel spent a lot of time in his blacksmith shop charging batteries for neighbors, fixing horses teeth, sharpening plough shears, etc for himself & others. They had to 'grub' out trees & roots by handp; plow with oxen; haul hay during a shortage from as far away as Buchanan with horse team & hayrack in snow so deep that you couldn't see any fence posts. Axel was a charter member of the Poplar Grove Lutheran Church. He suffered from an open sore on his leg that wouldn't heal, & was afraid that they may have to remove it, so died by his own hand. He is buried in the Poplar Grove Cemetary.
