a. Note:   MARY ELIZABETH MATHEWS Mary Elizabeth Mathews Allen was born 6 July 1842 in Marysville, Mississippi. She was the daughter of Benjamin F. Mathews, b. 16 April 1819 in Alabama and Temperence Weeks Mathews born in Tennessee in 1818. Her parents joined the church in 1839. Her father was a typical Southerner. He owned cotton plantations and a string of fine horses. When he decided to go West, he sold his plantations, and bought two heavy wagons which be loaded with provisions and implements. A third lighter wagon was made comfortable to ride and sleep
 in. He kept some horses and was quite well equipped for the long journey.
 They reached Fort Pueblo in the spring of 1846. The company made up in Fort Pueblo, arrived in Salt Lake City 29 July 1847. Some of the company went to California, but the Mathews family remained in Salt Lake Valley.
 The first real thing Mary could remember doing was helping to fight crickets with a home-made broom.
 In 1850 the family went to California where within three years they had amassed a fortune around Sutters Mill. Three years later they moved to San Bernardino, where Mary E. was married to James Allen 24 Dec. 1 86o. In June 1864 Mary, her husband and two daughters moved back to Utah settling in Richmond. Here they spent t he remainder of their lives. Mary Elizabeth died 12 Nov. 1912. Ancestral File Number:<AFN> 8M0G-0H
