Notes
a. Note:   This very interesting letter was forwarded to me, and was written in
1981. My family has been trying to locate more information on this
tragedy for many years. The following was published in the Hartford
 Republican, 03/22/1901.
  "A VERY SAD AFFAIR"
Last Monday evening the citizens of Sulfur Springs were greatly pained
to learn that a trouble which had been brewing for some time in the
community, had resulted in the loss of one of their neighbor's lives.
"CAP" DAVIS shot and instantly killed Joe MILLER late Monday evening
near Miller's house. Davis and his brother-in-law, J.G. DAFFRON (John?),
were together when the trouble arose. Mr. Miller was about 50 years old.
The trouble was over a family matter. Both families are highly respected
and sad affair has cast quite a pall over the entire community.
Davis came to town Tuesday morning and gave himself up and is being
guarded by Marshall C.E. MORRISON. His examing trial is set for 9 A.M.
 today."
My great grandmother saw her father shot and killed. She was only 12
years old. We were told that Joseph Miller was a Marshall or Sheriff,
and that both men involved in the shooting were both from very prominent
families. They both spent the rest of their lives in Jail.
This may have very well been due to Joseph Miller seeing the sister, wife or girlfriend of one of the men who shot him, but this is purely speculation.
