Note: Per 1850 IN census, William was 5, attending school, and born in Indiana. From REB viewing and photo copy of 1885 Kansas census of Highland township in Clay County, page 8 and line 9, a "W" Masterson age 40 is listed following "R" Masterson, wife Martha and children. So, this undoubtedly is "our" William Masterson as age fits. 1885 census shows him to be single. The next line following "W" is a Mary, age 69, so this must be Mary Clark Masterson! (Notice that William's obit states "his mother kept house for him until her death.")
