Note: orded on page 10 of thomas county marriage book H. the confederate army records at the Georgia archives in atlanta georgia show that Michael S. Gilliard (gillyard) enlisted on october 4,1861 at savannah, georgia in captain hitam c . bowen's company g, 29th regiment georgia infantry (17th patriots).this company was later changed to company c. 29th regiment georgia infantry. on january 7, 1862, michael and william richard wrote a letter to the folks at hame. william richard addressed his side of the letter to his dear wife nancy p. gillyard and michael addressed his side to his dear father and mother, michael gillyard and mary ann gillyard. william richard said they had just arrived at camp wilson located three miles from savannah along with 2100 other men . he said there were another 4000 men in savannah and they could hear heavy firing from the blockades in savannah at ships trying to pass the blockade. according to michael's side of the letter, george and joseph were also at camp wilson and they and they were going to look for them that night.they were expecting to hear from jerry but they were not expecting him to be in camp wilson yet. copies of this letter and another letter that william richard sent later on in the war are on file with the hard copy of the booklet. michaed is listed as being on furliugh during the month of august 1862. penny was born in may 1863, exactly nine months later. his records show that for part of his service he was assigned as a nurse in the confederate army hospital at causton's bluff, georgia. (from sept.7, 1862 until december 1862) his rate of pay was shown as 25 cent. he was captured at chicamauha, georgia on september 20,1863 and sent the union military prison at louisville, ky. on october 1,1863. on october 2,1863,he was sent to the P.O.W. camp att camp douglas, ill. . camp douglas was the largest prisoner of war camp in the narth. during the period from 1862 to 1865 there were 4,454 deaths recorded in this camp. thirty nine of the deaths were listed as civilians and the rest were soldiers and sailors. michael s. gilliard is listed as having died on march 20, 1864 of inflamation of the lungs and was buried in grave #1060 at chicago city cemetery(now known as oak woods cemetery). william gilliard ??? this william is a mystery to us . on the 1850 census of thomas county georgia, page 10-b michael and mary gilliard list two sons named william. there is on initial with either name and due to the fancy writing of the census taler, we are not sure of the age of this william. the second william did not serve in the war, and william richard told his grandchildren that all of his brothers had died in the war but him.however on the 1880 censis of thomas county georgia on page 376-c line 36. there is still a son named william, age shown as 50 yaers ols living with michael and his wife gillolia(dillla) dees and her three children, listed as michael's step; children. the some censis lists william richard gilliard and his family on page 380-d.the only explanation that we can think of is that this son may have been physically or mentally limieted, since hes name does not appear on the list of able bodied men who were not in the service that were on the militia list of 1863. this required that being in the service. since he was not listed . we must assume that he was not considered as able bodied and capable of being sent to war.
