Note: Some of this information is contradictory, so take it with a grain of salt. Birth date confusion--1831 or 1836???? Don Clendenin's aunt Beulah Scott said that James had one brother, Alexander and that the family broke up because of disagreement over the civil war. The 1900 census showed James had 15 children, 12 still living. There is an Aleander Carpenter on the LDS site born in 1834 in Knoxville, Knox, TN Father's name was James Carpenter and mother was Elizabeth Crank. ??? LDS records show the following information: James A. Carpenter, Born 11 nov. 1831, TN, Died 4 Apr 1908, Christian Co. MO Spouse: Julia M. CARR (AFN: V4N2-ZH) Marriage, 28 Jan 1866 , Vigo Co., IN ================================================================ There is doubt about his birth date. His tombstone in the Odd fellows cemetery in Ozark, Mo. has only the year--no month or day. It says only 1831 to 1908. Other information states that he was born Dec. 11, 1836. Another source says November 11, 1836. I have 2 census records, one 1880 and one 1900. Both agree that he would have been born in 1836. 1880 is Franklin Co., 1900 is James and Julia (Carr) Carpenter were married in Vigo Co., IN. Jan. 1866. Between June 1868 and July 1870 they moved to Franklin Co., Mo. Sometime between July 1880 and the fall of 1888, they moved to the Land neighborhood, near Leasburg, Mo. where their son, Royal, lived. Moved to Christian Co., Mo., probably about 1892. James middle name was Anderson as proven by his Bible record. Some folks thought it was Amos, or Aulden. ================================================================= ************************************************************************************** Christian Co.,Missouri. He had had one or more strokes and needed care. He went from Okmulgee area to Springfield to stay and be cared for by his son Jim Carpenter (James Jr. I think) who ran or managed a hotel or restaurant. After living there about 6 months he died, 4/4/1908. The son took his body to Ozark, Mo. to bury him by his wife, Julia. The funeral was at Springfield. James A. Carpenter was a drummer when he met Julia Carr in a hotel in Terre Haute, Indiana where she worked as a cook. They moved from Indiana to Franklin county, MO between June 1868 and July 1870. They lived in Franklin Co. until at least July 1880. Sometime before the fall of 1888 they moved to the "Land" Missouri where Julia's brother Royal Carr was living. Their burial place in Ozark, MO. is what used to be the Odd Fellows Cemetery but has been turned over to the city. ************************************************************************************** From Springfield, MO Daily Republican, page 52: Saturday morning, April 4, 1908.
