  THE OLD FAMILY DOCTOR
 By W.C. Harman
  Of all the most useful and needed men,
 The old family Doctor is first.
 Since by dire diseases a thousand and ten,
 The whole human race has been cursed.
  There's mumps and there's measles, malaria and worms
 And cancer and T.B. and flu,
 And millions of microbes, bacteria and germs,
 Without him, oh what would we do?
  When fever attacks us and racks us with pain
 He forfeits his rest and his sleep,
 And comes to our rescue through sunshine or rain,
 Though the mud or the snow is knee deep.
  He has no leisure, his soul's not his own,
 He belongs to the public, you know.
 He makes no excuse, he knows there's no use;
 When a doctor is called he must go.
  Ven Tom cut a foot or Fred break a leg,
 Or Shom bite himself mit a snake,
 Or Darter Katrina get choke on an egg,
 Or mine frau haf a toof mit an ache.
  Be you English or Irish or Yankee or Dutch,
 Or Frenchman or Pollack or Jew,
 He'll jump in his car and throw in the clutch
 And go racing like mad to save you.
  Then I say, treat him kindly and pay him his fee,
 He's human, you know, and must eat;
 And give him a wave and a smile when you see,
 Or meet him on highway or street.
  Just think of the babies he's brought into the world,
 And think of the hearts made glad.
 When he smilingly says, "it's a boy or a girl,
 And it sure looks a lot like it's dad."
  Then come right across with all that you owe,
 Keep his purse and his stomach well filled,
 For we just simply can't do without him, you know,
 When we think of the people he's k------cured.
