Notes
a. Note:   Hyram Williard Leach, youngest son of Rachel Meade and Levi Leach was born April 4, 1834 at Portage County, Ohio.
At the age of 4 he moved with is family to Lee County, Iowa near Ft. Madison. While living here his father died. In 1855 his mother and sisters moved farther west to Wayne County Iowa, near Corydon and Promise City. At Corydon, Iowa On May 29th, 1859 he married Miriam Chilcote. Miriam was the daughter of Mary and Jacob Chilcote and was born March 14, 1837, at Huntington County, PA. Hyram was a farmer and they continued to live in this area.
During the Civil War Hyram served as baggage master under Major Hinkle.
In 1865 the family was living in the Nebraska Territory. Hyram had gone west and taken a claim where one day the city of Lincoln would be built. In 1866 he traded the claim for a team of horses and returned to Iowa. At Gutherie he purchased 40 acres of land.
On Nov. 5, 1867 the oldest son Eddie passed away and later the same year a daughter Carrie was born. We are not sure when it happened, but sometime during this period Hyram deserted his family. He was restless for another style of life. He joined up with a freighting company where for the next five years he was employed hauling goods for the government from Omaha to Denver.
When he returned home after being gone for five years Miriam refused to take him back. Later they divorced.
On August 12 1874 Hyram married Ida May Parsons at the brides home near Corydon. Ida May was about 20 years younger than Hyram. While living there to sons were born.
In 1878 Hyram and his family, along with Levi(Robert Martin Leach's son) his Nephew went to Lincoln, KS. They homesteaded near Hunter.
The Ingalls School district #57 was located on Hyram's land. We know he taught school so we assume he taught this school.
Hyram was a notary public and the stamp he used spelled his name "Leeach". Perhaps a mistake was made when the stamp was made, and rather than correct it he used it that way. In his will his name is spelled Leeach, but as he names his children he uses the spelling Leach. His grave stone spells his name Leach.
His will leaves his property to his wife for her to use during her life time, then the land, 160 acres was to be divided. Ben and Glen each recieving 40 acres for which they paid $500. 80 acres was to be sold for not less than $2000. The money from the land was to be divided between the other children, who had already recieved some money. He left $25 each to Carrie and Rolly Charles and $100 to John if they could be found. Of course they weren't found.
Hyram had not kept in touch with the children from his first marriage. When John was about 12 he lived with his father for 2 years. We know little about his second family, although in later years John was in contact with his half brother Ben.
Hyram passed away at his home near the little village of Ingalls on July 7, 1907. He is buried in Spillman Cemetery, 2 1/2 miles south of his home. He was 73 years old.
