Notes
a. Note:   John Lee served in the Revolutionary War as a Private in Martin's Co., 2nd Regiment, N.C. He is buried in Bethel Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery (formerly known as Boney Bluff Church), in Fargo, Georgia. The original grave marker has been replaced with a new one. The original markers, made of cedar, have long since deteriorated.
John Lee, an early settler of Ware Co., was born on August 25, 1755 in North Carolina and married and lived in Wayne Co., until sometime around 1800 when he moved with his family to Georgia. He became among the first settlers of Appling Co., when it was opened up to settlers in 1819 and his found there in the 1820 Census. His wife's name cannot now be learned, descendants remembering only the husband's name. (some research indicated that her name was Elizabeth, but this has not been conclusively proven).
Early Huxford records show that Pollie (b. 1812 m. Tharp Roberts) was a child of John Lee. Later research has proven that she was not. She did live in the household and therefore was presumed by researchers to be a daughter.
John Lee was a Revolutionary Soldier in North Carolina and drew land as such in the 1827 Land Lottery (pg. 360, Knights's Roster of the Revolution), residing at the time in Ware County.
John bought land in Bulloch County, Georgia in1798 and in 1817 was a member of Beard's Creek Baptist Church, Tattnall County. In 1818 he was a member of "Purchase Church" on the Satilla River in Appling County, thus becoming one of the first settlers in that county. This church was renamed "Little Satilla Church" in 1819.
Mr. Lee was a delegate from his church to the Piedmont Baptist Association in 1817, 1818, 1819, 1820, and 1823. (data from old minutes of Piedmont Association)
In the creation of Ware County out of Appling in 1824, John Lee and his family were placed in the new county. His home was originally in Bacon County, but his last few years were spent in the southern part of Ware, on or near the Suwanee River (Fargo, Ga.), where he is found in the 1830 Census. He died there in 1838. (Census ref: 1790, Wayne County, N.C., 1820; 1820, Appling; 1830, Ware)
John moved to the Fargo area later in his life to live with one or more of his sons that had located to that area. John's son, Lewis, was the administrator of his estate. Ware County records wre burned and none are available prior to 1847. However, the files of the Southern Recorder of Milledgeville, Ga., show an advertisement, dated September 1, 1839, and placed by Lewis Lee, for the sale of his father's cattle on Saturday, November 9, 1839.
At the present time (July 1998), there is much speculation as to the name of John Lee's wife as well as the names of his parents. Many who have researched our family think the wife's name to be: Elizabeth and his father to be: Walter Washington Lee. I must say, however, that neither of these has been conclusively proven. New sources have been uncovered which may reveal the correct name/names. But until that information is validated, I choose not to list it in my research.
