Note: The 1880 census shows that Joseph and Mary Casper had 9 children, but only 7 were surviving. They immigrated Abt. 1871 or 1872. There was another child named Anna Maria Casper, b: Feb. 28, 1877, Bapt. March 4, 1877 at St. Mary's Church in Avon,Ohio. She died before 1880. No date yet. She was called Emma also. Nothing on the other child that died. Mary Sehl b. Aug. 11, 1843. Catherine was born about 1878 and was still surviving in 1900, but she was dead by 1916, according to Joseph's obituary. Joseph was survived by, Three daughters, Mrs. John (Mary) Smith, Mrs. Charles (Barbara) Kreitzer, Mrs. Joseph (Emma) Hinkle. Three sons: Peter, Mathias, Nicholas Casper. On the same page as the Obituary there was a note stating that : A barn belonging to John M. Alten was struck by lightning last Thursday night and burned to the ground. John M. Alten is Rose Casper's brother. Joseph resided with his daughter, Mary Smith, at the time of his death. She lived in East Avon. The information was obtained from St. Mary's in Avon & the 1880 census, the obituary of Joseph ( none found for Mary). The death information was from his death certificate also, like occupation. Joseph was one of the four Church Councilmen. They were John Dechant, Martin Rink Sr. (my cousins grandfather-in-law.) John Biermacher and my Great-Grandfather Joseph. I found out that he was a barber also. No time frame for that yet. I believe that they came from Senheim, Germany. Information came from my cousin Tracie Hepner, she found from the Fairview library. I have a document, written in German, I believe it is for passage to the USA. I can make out some of what it says. Lists Joseph Caspar, and his birth date, Maria Anna Sehl, her birth date, where they lived and named their three children. Maria Anna, her birth date, Pater Casper, his birth date, & Mathias Casper, his birth date. They were quite young when they came here. My cousin Gayle Hepner will try to get a German couple to translate the document for us. It is written in old German writing. The document is like a passport to America. Joseph and Mary had 6 months in which to come to America or the document would not be any good. It says that they came from Senheim, Germany, County or State of Zell. This is close to the Mosel River, an extension of the Rhine River. It also gives their birth dates and their children's birth dates, also that Joseph was a Tailor. Mary's maiden name is spelled Sehl. I believe that is the correct way to spell it, also Joseph's last name is spelled Caspar not Casper. While I was checking the Lorain Probate books for information about other individuals, I came across a name Casper Casper, he died 1875, at the age of 45, in Avon, Ohio. I do not know where he is buried as of yet. There is also a Julis Casper b.1867 d. 1869. He is buried at St. Mary's Avon and they have no record of him. I am very interested to find out who this Casper Casper is, he may have been a brother of Joseph. ______________________________________ Information given to Christine Sievers from her mother Dolores: She has been getting many stories from her mother. They may be clues, or they may be tall family stories. Her mother is 89, and sometimes gets a little mixed up. But, she thinks her memories of the past are accurate. According to her, she heard that Joseph Caspar was an orphan. She said someone was tracing the records, and came to a brick wall when they traced him to an orphanage in Alsace. The orphanage had burned down, with all the records. Christine hopes that her mother's memories are correct. Although she could be confusing Joseph with the other Great-grandfather Joseph Hinkel. She remembers Aunt Sophie (Nicholas Casper's wife) going and visiting relatives of the Caspers. Supposedly, Great Grandmother Mary Ann Sehl Casper, came from a well to do family who had a farm in Luxembourg, and a home in Strasburg, or the other way around. She had also heard that Great grandfather Joseph Casper had been married before in France, and there were no children. I am guessing that his wife died, if that is so, maybe that is why he was in his 30's when he married Mary Ann Sehl. She said grandpa was a tailor and grandma was a mid-wife. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- April 23, 1999 - Friday I just met my cousin Margaret Urig Bily today. She is from Washington State and she gave me records that her Aunt Rita had on the family. In those records it states that Joseph Casper had a brother that went to Brazil, South America. This is great news. When you least expect to find something, up it pops. This is a great lead. More later. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- May 6, 1999 - Thursday - additional notes from Christine Sievers Christine said that her mother thinks that Joseph was born in France. She doesn't quit remember, but seems to think he was. I know that part of France was Germany first and then the boundaries were changed and then some of the border towns were in France. It switched a few times. Alsace - Lorraine was one of those towns. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- May 28, 1999 - Friday - Information obtained from micro film from LDS library in Westlake, OH - I recently went to the Latter Day Saint Library and viewed films from Senheim Catholic Church records. I found that Joseph was indeed married before and his first wife was Anna Maria Keys (I think that this is her last name, writing is hard to read). He married her in Senheim, Germany in 1863. She must have died within a year and a half. The records show that he married Maria Anna Sehl on 28-11-1865. This could also be when it was recorded and not the wedding date. The records are in Latin and hard to read. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- May 28, 1999 - Friday - On the marriages of Joseph, he may have been married a third time in Alsace. I have to do more research. There is a 12 year difference between Joseph and Mary, so it is possible that he could have been married a third time. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ On the information sent to me by Willi Putz, there is an abbreviation Adop, it might mean that Joseph was adopted because his father died when he was 12 and his mother died when he was 14. I am still trying to get more information. There are witnesses to this also: Joh. Nic. Nicolay, age 36 & Pet. Jos. Menten, age 4, shoemakers, Nic. Menten, age 31, stonemaker and Joh. Jos. Nicolay, age 29, shoemaker. Don't have a clue what they witnessed.
