Notes
a. Note:   Peter Casper died 3 days after my fathers 15th birthday. My dad was Peter & Rose's 11th & last child. I don't know very much about my grandfather & I only have one side view picture of him. He's sitting in front of Uncle Ed's garage. Peter & Rose were married almost 35 years, when he died.
In the book: A History of St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception 150 yrs it tells all about how the church was started and who helped to make it all possible. I was reading a part about when the new church was dedicated on July 4, 1896 and the day and evening that was planned, when I came across a something about my grandparents that I did not know, both Peter and Rose were in a Quartet and they sang that evening. The other half of the quartet were Mr. and Lady Martindale.
I also learned from my Aunt Lenore that Peter played the violin.
At the first Church Council meeting of 1896, Father Falk posed a vital question: "What was to be done with the old church?" Everyone agreed to the need for a Parish Hall and so they immediately set about building one. Peter Casper, Mathias Alten and others dismantled the tower; Jacob Lescher shingled the entire roof for $29.00. But as a hall, the building was in need of more windows for illumination. They would need to plaster, and to paper and paint to make it less like a church and more like a hall. Ceiling lights were added; and from Mr. Moor's factory in Ridgeville, 100 chairs were purchased for $37.50----meaning that, from then on, those who met in the hall would no longer have to borrow chairs from the Town Hall. Total cost of renovation was $1,900.00.
