John Nickell was known as "Black John" from the dark skin and straight black hair he reportedly inherited from his Indian ancestors. (There seems to be little proof for this claim apart from his son "Preacher Joe" Nickell's "Indian" features, including prominent cheekbones, which are recorded in old tintypes.)
Black John Nickell's descendants have long claimed he built the first cabin in what later became Morgan County, the story eventually having been published in a 1932 "History of the Nickell Family". Under the heading, "The Two Panthers", it relates how Black John Nickell found "no habitation" when he "explored the upper waters of Red River" with his eldest sons, Preacher Joe and Black Andy, ages 10 and 8. Finding a good spot for a homesite, he fashioned a lean-to for the boys and left them with their dog while he returned to Clark county for the rest of the family. On the first afternoon, two panthers came to the river to drink. The dog managed to kill each in turn (although it later died from its wounds) and so the boys were safe when their father returned the third day.
Since Preacher Joe (later founder of Morgan's first Disciples of Christ Church) had been ten years old, and was born in 1792, it was therefore supposedly possible to "fix the time for first settlement of Morgan County at 1802". (Source- Article written by John Tom Hazelrigg)
