I never asked him if it was true, but I know it was since he was my favorite uncle. You always knewwhen Randall liked you, because he teased you. (He teased me a lot.)In fact, he was the world's best teaser. My visions of sugar plumswere interrupted on many a Christmas morning at 2 or 3 o'clock. Hewould call just to see if you were awake. He would wait about an hour- and then he'd call again. He could see our house from his and hecould see when the lights went on - and he'd want to know why we weresleeping in so late. The madder you got, the more he'd laugh, and themore he'd keep calling. Later on during the day, he'd stop by just tosee if you were still mad at him. I don't believe he ever slept onChristmas Eve. New Year's was pretty much the same story - The firstto wish a "Happy New Year". When our family would get together onChristmas, we'd all ask what time Randall had called everyone. Noneof us were ever safe. He gave new meaning to the phrase "Reach Outand Touch Someone." Randall loved babies. They made him so happy. He was my firstvisitor after I returned home from the hospital with Jeff. He feltthat it was important that I learn the proper way to rock a baby. Itwasn't good enough that I already thought I knew how, he wouldn't takemy word for it. He made me sit in the rocker and show him that I knewhow. Of course, I didn't do it right, and he stayed until I'd learnedthe proper "Randall" technique. He was the kind of guy who would getteary-eyed. I remember he was pretty teary that day. Randall loved to visit. He was the most frequent visitor to ourhouse. Mother and I would sit at the kitchen table or under the treesin the yard and listen to his stories. He told stories about hiskids, their families, and people around town. He knew everything - henever gossiped, just dealt in the facts! Randall always had a taleabout one of the kids. He was always very interested in hearing aboutmy brothers, and kept current on all of our lives. He loved to shock people. He would tell the craziest stories with astraight face and people believed everything he said. My favoritestories were the ones about how he spent the tithing money when he wasthe ward clerk. He offered to lend it to others as well. I don'tthink there's a kid in town who didn't hear about the booger bitinghis finger off. Shocking, simply shocking! We visited with Afton and Randall often. Once or twice a week we'dstop by their house to say hello. We never phoned ahead - no need to,we were always welcome. I always enjoyed our visits because I knew Iwould get an ice cold Coke. Not in a glass - but the whole bottle forme, all by myself. I think Randall was the original coke-acholic. Hewas happiest when he was rocking, talking and drinking coke. I remember hugs and kisses. He was that special uncle that alwaysgot a kiss and a squeeze. Never just a peck - but a great big smackerright on the lips. He gave great hugs. Whenever Mom and Dad would go on a vacation without kids. I stayed atRandall and Afton's. I never wanted to stay anywhere else. (I alwaysthought it was neat that Susan could eat Campbell's Soup forbreakfast.) After Susan left home, I got to stay in her room. Bythat time, I was old enough to drive. Every morning when I was readyto go to school, he had the truck all warmed up and ready to go. Heknew I wasn't supposed to drive the truck - but he never told. He was funny, he made people happy, he loved us and he made us alllaugh. He'd tease you until you were "mad as hell" and then he'dstart laughing. That's when he enjoyed it the most. He'd never stopuntil you were laughing too. I guess I'm glad I have a little Schear in me. If you know someonewho doesn't know how to rock a baby - send them by - I was taught bythe "Master".
