Ellis attended Oklahoma A&M for awhile, but did not finish. He attended Bristow Community College and was trained in bookkeeping accounting. During the Depression his jobs included being a bookkeeper for his cousin George Horany's beer distributing comapny. He worked in aircraft factories during WWII. After the war his family returned to Bristow, Oklahoma and he purchased his father's clothing store, which he and Mable owned until their retirement around 1985.
