Nelson George Smith was my grandfather and he was a very special
man. He didn't drink, smoke, or swear, and was a very thrifty and
 conscientious person.
He left San Francisco as a young man for Honolulu, Territory ofHawaii.
After finding work he sent for his mother, father, and sister to join
him. He worked in construction and later worked at the Kamehameha
School for Hawaiian Children as a shop teacher. His children, Vernon,
Claire and Dorothy also attended as they were part Hawaiian. When
Dorothy was about 9 years old she became ill and was sent to the
infirmery. While there, the nurse refused her all food and drink for
several days (probably so she wouldn't throw-up). However, she became
very hungary and her sister, Claire, would sneak her some crackers to
eat. When her father came to visit her, she cried & lifted her gownto
showed him her stomach, and she was skin and bones. He picked her up
and took her home! He was fired!! She stayed home and was cared forby
"Grannie" and went to public school. Vernon and Claire remained at
 Kamehameha.
After Granddad was fired he started his own painting business. Theyhad
some hard years, but he became a well known contractor and a success.
I remember one story he told me of one of his first jobs, painting the
Opera House. He had won the bid, provided he could be finished by a
certain date. He said they painted night and day and was was loading
supplies out the back door as the audience was filing in the frontdoor!!
But he finished by his deadline! He invested in real estate andrentals and
became a large property owner in Honolulu. Nelson was a paintingcontractor for the Nelson Smith Painting Co., Honolulu, HI.!BIRTH:Records destroyed in San Francisco Earthquake and fire in 1906
