Note: Changed his name to his mothers surname, Barbara Pope (nee Woodward). His Father, Edward Pope, was a carter. Folklore is that John cut off his beard whilst eh was in a drunken stupor and fearing retribution, ran away, chageing his name to avoid discovery. He spent some time in India as a drummer boy and eventually came to South Africa.
