Note: Married Name:<_MARNM> CATHERINE QUINN Catherine McNamara Quinn's parents were John McNamara and Honora Meaney. They were married by the Rev. John Dwyer in the Parish of Fedamore, County Limerick, Ireland, on February 2, 1811. Their first born was my great great grandmother, Catherine, baptized November 20, 1811. Only one sponsor is listed--that of Bridget Shaughnessy. See notes above concerning Catherine. Her brothers and sisters were: Bridget, baptized Fedamore Parish, November 4, 1814 John, baptized Fedamore Parish, May 5, 1817 Patrick, baptized Ballybricken Parish, February 10, 1820 Johanna, baptized Ballybricken Parish, July 7, 1822 The following information about John McNamara was provided by Mary Pyne of the Limerick Regional Archives, Michael Street, Limerick: "In 1833...we found that John McNamara lived at Gortboy where he leased 6 and 3/4 acres of land. Gortboy is a townland ie rural subdivision of land in the civil parish of Caherelly," she wrote. I have no further information about Ellen's brothers and sisters. Catherine Mcnamara married John Quinn were married in Ballybricken, County Limerick, Ireland on March 3, 1835. See notes for their daughter, Ellen Boylan, for further information. Until September of 1991 I didn't even know that Catherine had emigrated to the States. I found her by accident when I was looking up the Richard Shortell family in the 1900 Federal Census. The family lived at 49 Franklin Street. The census shows that Catherine was Richard Shortell's mother-in-law, a white female born in March of 1820 (she was actually born November 11, 1811); that she was 80 years of age (she actually 89); that she had six children, three of whom were still alive (they were Ellen, Catherine, and Honora); that she had emigrated to the United States 45 years previously; that she could read but not write and speak English. Catherine died on January 12, 1905 at the age of 93. The cause of death noted by the attending physician, Dr. William Wilson, is "gastritis." However, an undated Meriden Record article had this to say about her death: "Mrs. Katherine (sic) Quinn , one of Wallingford's oldest Irish residents passed away Thursday morning at 6:40 at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Richard Shortelle (sic) of Franklin Street after an illness of 10 weeks. Mrs. Quinn sustained a fall which was the cause of her death. She had been a resident of Wallingford for nearly forty years. She leaves three children, Mrs. Richard Shortelle, Mrs. Ellen Boylan and Mrs. John F. Leonard. She was the grandmother of 20 grandchildren and 25 great grandchildren, all residents of Wallingford. The funeral will take place on Saturday morning from Holy Trinity church. Internment at St. Bernard's Cemetery, New Haven. Friend please omit flowers."
