Carl served as a medic in the Army in Europe during World War II. He met his wife in Atlantic City, when the big hotels were converted to hospitals for the wounded GIs. After the divorce, Carl returned to his hometown of Marion to spend time with his brother and sister. He suffered multiple heart attacks and was placed in the VA hospital in Marion. He was able to leave the hospital in order to attend the 50th wedding anniversary of his sister and brother-in-law, Edna and Shorty Bearden, in Chicago. He returned to Marion, only to be placed back in the VA hospital, where he died. Two of his sons, Carl & Steve and his daughter, Karen, were with him before he died. Carl was buried next to Shorty Bearden's parents in Rose Hill Cemetery in Marion, IL. Johnny Piper served as proxy for Carl in performing the Baptism and Endowment work.
