a. Note:   He was named for Lt. Colonel William Washington, under whom his father Ambrose Gordon served during the Revolutionary War. He became the first Georgian to graduate from the U.S. Army's military academy at West Point and was Mayor of Savannah. He was founder and president of Georgia's first railroad--the Central Railroad and Banking Co., which later became the Central of Georgia Railroad. Gordon County, GA was named for him. The Gordon Monument, located in the center of Wright Square in Savannah, GA was created to honor him.
