STEWARDS OF THE MONTH: By Leila Mae Robinson Averett: ( Thisarticle was published in the Turners Chapel newsletter, "TheChapel Chimes" Feb. 1991. Daddy, A J Robinson, was born Nov. 21, 1903 in Tiff CountyGeorgia to James Patrick and Ethelene Pearl Robinson. He had twosisters and six brothers. Mama, Queenie Mary Robinson, was born April 28, 1908 in TaylorCounty Georgia to William Jefferson and Rommie NarcillousRobinson. She had four sisters and four brothers. Daddy and Mama were both rasied on a farm. Everyone had to carrytheir own load so the family could survive. Times were hard. Daddy and Mama met in Manchester, Georgia in 1923 where theyboth worked in the cotton mill. They dated about a year and weremarried May 10 1924. Robinson married Robinson. They stayed onin Manchester about 2 in half years, then coming back to TaylorCounty to start their family. Their first child was born June30, 1927. All six children were born in Taylor County. Our house burned in January 1942. We stayed awhile with Grandmathen we came home to live in a chicken house until Daddy got ourhouse built back. Over the years te worked hard, taking both tocare for a family. They often kept some of the family or familychildren due to sickness or death in the family. Mama was active in Turners Chapel Church. She was one of thefirst group of ladies to organize the "Ladies Auxilliary" atTurners Chapel. She taught "Sunday School and Bible School"; shehelped make quilts and cakes and anything else to build our newchurch. She fed the preacher and his family many weekends andalso gave them a place to sleep, even Bro. Charles and SisterJanice and family when they first came to Taylor County. Daddywas a farmer, shoemaker, repairman, sawmill and textile millworker. He was a school bus driver, state highway employee andcarpenter. He is still a carpenter though he would rather makesomething pretty out of wood. The last 10 years of Mama's lifehe was a devoted nurse and compainion to her. The best gift they ever gave us was their love, care, andteaching us right from wrong and keeping us together.
