MN roll 1099, pa. 40A, ED 246, image 725.0 Clarence G.49IL Stella49SD Delmar22ND Richard21ND Douglas18ND Catherine11MN William05MN Clarence was born in Phoenix Township in Henry County,Illinois on November 8, 1880. His father was 21 years of age and his mother was just 19. His father , Fortesque Linnell, died of dropsey when Clarence was just 10 months old. His mother, Anna Catherine, remarried a William Nelson Baker on April 2, 1884 and 8 more children were born to his mother. Two of which died in infancy. Mr. Baker was not a loving man at home and sometimes could be very cruel but as a minister of the United Brothern Church he was well respected in the community. On July 17, 1887, John Adam Miller petitioned the court to appoint Adam Dunlap as the legal guardian of Clarence. John Adam Miller was Clarence grandfather and Anna Catherine's father. This way William Baker could not gain control of the trust fund left to Clarence by his father. At the age of 14, Clarence went to live in Genesco with his aunt, Minnie Miller. Minnie was the wife of Francis (Frank) Miller who was the older brother of his mother. It was here in Genesco that Clarence attended High School. During this time part of his land was leased to his mother and step-father for $100.00 per year for five years. The land was leased on the 1st of March 1895 and the lease ended in the year 1901. His mother and step-siblings moved to Zion,IL soon afterwards. When he finished high school he morgaged his land to be able to pay for tuition at Metropolitan Business College in Chicago. Upon graduation he went to live with his uncle, Frank Miller, in Sioux Fall, South Dakota. (This infor came from Doug Linnell and is questionable. Records show Minnie Miller was Frank's wife and they were living in Genesco as late as 1901.) On Clarence's 21st birthday his apointed guardian, Clarence attended high school in Geneseo, IL, graduated from the Metropolitan Business College in Chicago on 31 Jul 1901. A job in a bank in LaVerne, MN taught him various aspects of banking. Together with Ed Quame they opened a bank in Finley, ND. Clarence and Stella lived in Finley for 10 years where Clarence became a bank examiner and officer of the National Exchange Bank. A few years later Clarence took over the Guarantee State Bank of Minneapolis that had gone into receivership. Through a series of crises this bank failed. Clarence found work at the Northern Coal and Dock Co. from with he retired in 1947. (Wynn, pa. 379) CLARENCE G.
