a. Note:   From the History of Jones County: J.M. LINNELL, contractor and builder, Monticello; is a native of Jefferson Co., New York, and was born in Watertown Aug. 1, 1836; his parents came to Illinois when he was 14 years of age, and he grew up to manhood in that State, and learned the trade of carpenter and joiner in Chicago; in the fall of 1861, he came to Iowa and located at Monticello; at that time there were only a few houses here; since then he has been contracting and building, and has erected many of the best buildings in the city; he has been engaged in building here longer than any other builder. Mr. Linnell was united in marriage to Miss Eunice Starts, a native of Clinton Co., N.Y., Feb. 22, 1859; they have one daughter--Jennie I. Mr. Linnell is connected with the Masonic Order, and is a member of Burns Lodge.
  In 1848 John was a carpenter and joiner in Chicago, IL. In the fall of 1861 he moved to Monticello, IA and became a contractor and builder in that city. He lived there the remainder of his life erecting some of the finest buildings in the city. The Descendants of Robert Linnell by Rachel L.Wynn. pa 342.
