Joseph and Mary Jane were married in Sauk Co., WI in 1858. Joseph at that time was 23 years old and Mary Jane just 15. they lived with or near rufus and Lucy, Joseph's parents. Family tradition has it that Mary Jane was taking baby Lewis to visit relatives across a swampy area on a bitter cold day, even though it was July, 1866, became ill from exposure, and died soon after. Joseph marrried Sarah by late 1867, continuing to live in Illinois for some years. Probably six of their children were born there. The Census of 1889 shows Joseph and Sarah in Vernon Co., WI where Herbert was born in 1876. In 1878 Joseph owned a farm of 80 acres, section 25, in the township of Greenwood in Wisconsin. Tressie was buried there in 1880. By 1885 they had moved on to Iowa for ella was buried in Pleasant Grove Cemetery, Greene, Iowa in 1886. Here the parents remained and both Joseph and Sarah are buried in the Pleasant Grove Cemetery. The Children who survived moved into Minnesota and are detailed in the next generation."
