  3857 Pte Clarke Joseph A.---- Britannia Cove

  Joseph Allan Clarke. A month before the First World War ended on November 11, 1918, Joseph Clarke was wounded twice. Joseph was born to John and Martha Clarke of Middle Lance Cove in May, 1898. He enlisted in the Royal Newfoundland Regiment when he was 18 years and 11 months old. While fighting in France on October 3, 1918 he was wounded in the leg, but after receiving medical attention he continued to see active duty in the field. The next day he suffered more extensi8ve wounds and was returned to England to recover at a Military Hospital. On May 22, 1919 Private Joseph Clarke left Liverpool, England for St. John's, Newfoundland where he was discharged from teh Regiment during demotilization on July 5, 1919. See photo page 41. page 17 lists his military registration number as 3857. Spells his middle name Allen.
