Note: Was a Whitesmith/Tinsmith when he entered the military I was given a better translation of Mark and Catherine's marriage The 6 February 1844 after publication of three banns made with promise of our parish masses (?) between Mark Hamond majority son of Thomas Hamond and of Elizabeth Temple of this parish of the one part and Catherine Ossack majority daughter of Charles Ossack and of Catherine Dohenn also of this parish of the other part. No impediment (actually I think the word is impeachment) discovered we the undersigned priest vicar of Saint Roch of Quebec have received the mutual consent of marriage and gave them the nuptial benediction in the presence of Patrick Meehan and of George Clarke neither of whom could signa word between lines good (referring to a correction in the text)[signed] N Beaubiens priest ---------------- Was in the 68th Garrison Regiment in Quebec City in 1844. The Regiment then moved to Chester, Cheshire. 16/05/1819 c. Mark son of Thomas and Elizabeth Hammond labr of Mickley Mickley is 1 mile north of Azerley and about 1 mile east of Grewelthorpe. His siblings are listed as born in Lamb Close Dallowgill which is just north of Pateley Bridge. He is not the Mark Tomline Hammond who died in Sept Quarter of 1847 as that Mark was son of Anthony. Mark Tomline Hammond died in 1847 at the age of 18. Mark Hammond married Feb 6.1844 St-Roch to Catherine O'Shea the original document looks like Mark's mother was Elizabeth Temple, not Jemph. Mark parents : Thomas Hammond-Elisabeth Jemph?/Temple? Catherine parents : Charles O'Shea-Catherine Delamp?/Delunn? -------------------------------- Mark Emond-Hamond married Catherine Ossack-O'Shea Feb 6, 1844 at St Roch, Quebec City Mark parents were Thomas Emond-Hamond and Elizabeth Jemph Catherine parents were Charles Ossack-O'Shea and Catherine Delemp B.D. ----------------------------------- Mark Hammond was a Soldier and he died bef 1851. Mark Hammond's daughter married James Pounder --------------------- According to the marriage certificate of John Hammond who married Mary Jane Harrison, John Hammond's father was MARK Hammond, not John Hammond Sr. ---------------------------------------- This St. Roch is a neighbourhood and church in Quebec City. I think they are referring to the church within Quebec City --------------------------------- This is from the Index of Irish Marriages, Vol 2: Mark Hammond, son of Thomas and Elizabeth Temple married on 6 Feb 1844 Catherine Ossark, daughter of Charles and Catherine Ochense witnesses:Patrick Meehan, Georges Clarke ------------------------------- This is from Mariages de St-Roch de Quebec by Pontbriand: Mark Hammond, son of Thomas and Elizabeth Temple married on 6 Feb 1844 Catherine Ossack, daughter of Charles and Catherine Delunn The transcribers obviously had a great deal of trouble with the names in Catherine's family! Good luck, Linda Linda Maguire Maitland White Rock (Vancouver), BC ----------------------------- I think I found Mark Hammond in 1841...in Kirby Malzead, Dacre Banks....NOTE: might not be him as found 2 mark hamman/hannam's marrying in the same area...to Hannah Grange in 1841 (which is a member of this Houseman household), and to Mary Morley in 1847. The MArk Hannam who married Mary is listed as from Fountains Earth and Stone Beck Down which is quite close to Dallowgill. The other Mark Hannam who married Hannah Grange, however is listed as being born in Sykes, near Pateley Bridge. Both raised families well into the 1880's. However, the Mark who married Mary Morley was also married prior and had 2 children: Hannah and Mary...so this is not our Mark either. George Houseman 45 - farmer Jane Houseman 45 John Houseman 7 William Houseman 9 ------------------------------ The mark in dacre banks is probably not our mark...he wasn't born in the right place. (our mark was in Jamaica....see note below) The other mark who married mary was born in the right place but this looks like him in 1841...as mary and Hannah were listed as his childrein 1851 census too...so he was married prior...but not to Hannah...that is a different mark. Now both marks in this area were married and continued to stay in the area from 1841 onwards...so not likely the mark that went and married in Quebec in 1844 Name:Mark Hannum Age:20 Estimated Birth Year:abt 1821 Gender:Male Where born:Yorkshire, England Civil Parish:Addle Hundred:Skyrack (Upper Division) County/Island:Yorkshire Country:England Street address: Occupation: View Image Registration district:Otley Sub registration district:Harewood Neighbors:View others on page Household Members:NameAge Mark Hannum 20 Hannah Hannum 4 Mary Hannum 2 --------------------- From: Lauren OHara [mailto:searcher@searcher-na.co.uk] Sent: 23 March 2009 18:01 To: mbriscoe@zetnet.co.uk Cc: searcher@searcher-na.co.uk; searcher@searcher-na.co.uk Subject: 035L Mark Hammond Dear Martin I began the search for any records of Mark Hammond by checking the discharge papers for the pre 1855 period, but there were no papers in place for him, which would imply that he did not discharge to a pension. A pension would be awarded as a result of long service or sickness or wounds. I then set about reconstructing his career from the muster rolls of the 68th of Foot. WO 12/7650 1837-1839 Waterford Mark enlisted into the Depot of the 68th of Foot as Private No 1358 on 3rd March 1838, but he defected on his way to join the regiment. He was aged 18 years and 11 months and was 5 feet 6 inches tall. He enlisted in Leeds. This entry in the musters is very faint and thus difficult to read. WO 12/7651 1838-1839 Waterford Mark rejoined from desertion on 5th April 1838. He transferred to the Service Companies (main battalion) on 2nd February 1839 and arrived in Jamaica on 19th March 1839. He was sick in hospital during the muster of March 1839. WO 12/7652 1839-1840 Jamaica Mark was on Detachment in Falmouth, Jamaica throughout these musters. WO 12/7653 1840-1841 Jamaica Mark remained present throughout. WO 12/7654 1841-1842 Jamaica and William Henry, Canada The regiment sailed to Canada during June and July 1841. WO 12/7655 1842-1843 Quebec Mark remained present throughout. WO 12/7656 1843-1844 Quebec Ditto WO 12/7657 1844-1845 Quebec, Canterbury and Walmer The regiment returned to England during the muster of April to June 1844. An Anthony Hammond joined the regiment in 1845. WO 12/7658 1845-1846 Walmer, Portsmouth, Weedon and Chester Mark remained present throughout. WO 12/7659 1846-1847 Chester Castle and Dublin Mark died on 5th February 1847. He was seconded to Maryborough during the musters of November and December 1846 and January 1847. Mark's entry in the Deaths muster shows that he was born in Ripon and that he was a whitesmith by trade when he enlisted on 3rd March 1838. He died in Mountmellick. He had no Will and had effects of 7 shillings and a quarter of a penny. His next of kin was his wife, Catharine who resided at Ripon. There were no Married Rolls within these musters. I searched the Regimental Returns of Births, but there were no relevant listings. These Returns are not complete though. I also searched the Chaplains' Returns of Deaths but Mark's death had not been registered. Usually only deaths abroad were registered. I have taken digital images, which I will send to you later today via YouSendIt. I hope that you find this report and the images obtained to be of interest. Best wishes Lauren OHara

National Archives of Canada reference: RG 7 G 18, vol. 46, pp. 1-99, microfilm reel H-962. ----------------------------------- I also searched the Chaplains' Returns of Deaths but Mark's death had not been registered. Usually only deaths abroad were registered. I think this means that Ireland was not classed as "abroad", it was just part of Britain at that time. _______________________________________ Martin Briscoe Fort William M&LFHS | Gwynedd FHS --------------------------------------------- <noelcoonan@yahoo.co.uk <mailto:noelcoonan@yahoo.co.uk>> Hi Martin. I visited Mountmellick and Portlaoise Church of Ireland cemeteries recently in search of Mark's grave. No joy I'm afraid. Most of the headstones in Mountmellick are horizontal, which makes them more rain and frost damaged and very difficult to read. In both cemeteries there were a lot of headstones that I was unable to read. All I can suggest to you is that you contact Midland Ancestry in Tullamore. All the headstones in Laois have been listed by the Laois Historical Society. All this information has been given to Midland Ancestry. The downside of this is that Midland Ancestry will charge you 45 Euro for a search. If weather improves in next few weeks I will have a look in Rosenallis Cof I cemetery when I'm passing that way. Good wishes. Noel
