  [it was in fact, Thomas Coldbeck and Catherine Swales. She was not married to Thomas Coldbeck and still bore the surname of John Swales her deceased previous husband]

My reason for an email is that I have been visiting the Northallerton Records Office and looked up amongst other people your Margaret Swales 1861 (Daughter of Catherine). I could find a baptism for Margaret to a Catherine Swales (Spinster ?) but the father was not Thomas Swales as you suggested but a Thomas Coldbeck. The baptism was listed at Grewelthorpe on the 20/1/1861 and is listed as the illegitimate daughter of Catherine Swales and Thomas Coldbeck. If you have the marriage certificate of John Swales you will already know the names of the witnesses, amongst them is a Thomas Colbeck (I believe him to be the same person). The Thomas Coldbeck referred to could possibly be Thomas born circa 1826 who in 1861 was single (Farmers son) at the age listed as 33. I believe he married Mary Anne Pickles in the June qtr of 1861. Therefore, I believe the only connection you have with the Swales family is that Catherine Married John Swales on the 17 June 1854 and did not have any children with John or any other member of the Swales family.
