intended Address, 51 Tramway Cottages, Newark, Nott. ------------------------------ I have contacted the Southampton Bereavement Services (for graves) as well as the 2 local churches close to where my grandfather lived, and the city archives as well as the major newspaper's archives and found no trace of either my grandfather's grave or an obituary in Southampton. It seems that he either did not get buried or he was not buried in Southampton. Nor does it seem that he had a funeral. There were no obituaries listed in the major newspaper called Southern Evening Echo from Dec 12, 1964 up to Dec 9, 1965 which was well after the coronors inquest was over. I wonder if it is possible that my grandfather was buried with his father in Nottinghamshire? I will have to research this
--------------------- Address at time of death: 108 Kingsclere Avenue, Weston Estates, Woolston, Southampton, England.
Letter from Rose (his wife at the time) states he died on the Saturday Morning (during the night)...which makes it Dec 12, 1964 as that was a Saturday. However, certificate of death states he died Dec 11, 1964. He probably died shortly before midnight on Dec 11, 1964 and was declared dead before midnight but Rose was notified either during the night or early the next morning and told it happened during the night. She would assume then, that it was Dec 12th. ----------------------------------------
This is my dad's father (Donna Alden's grandfather). He apparently left home when my father was about 5 years old. My father knew very little about him. My father changed his name in 1958 from Merlin Mark Eugene Pounder to Merl Eugene Alden because he did not like his father. In approx. 1964, Albert contacted my father to come and visit and see his grand-daughter, Helen (my sister). Only a few months later he was killed by a bus. My grandmother painted a horrible picture of my grandfather, but in the letters Albert wrote to my dad, it appeared that he was a nice man who was driven out of the house by my grandmother. However, my father, Merl, did state that his father sexually abused my dad's sister (Roberta) and physically abused my dad and his mother. I suppose he may not have been as nice as he appeared in his letters. Albert went to work up north because he couldn't find a job in the area they were living during the depression. When he found a job and a home, he called for my grandmother to come. She refused to go and years later she/he filed for a divorce. He never did remarry, but he had a common-law spouse (legally married spouse??) in England before he died as a letter to my father after Albert's death indicated that a woman was living with him and she called herself his wife at time and housekeeper at other times....but I think that they were romantically involved. The article from the newspaper on my grandfather's death states that Rose was Mrs. Rose Pounder.
In subsequent talks with my father, he indicated that his father also physically and sexually abused both his mother and sister. My father said that he witnessed this abuse toward his mother and was told about the other abuse by his sister, Roberta Marjorie Pounder.
However, Mark Hammond Pounder (James' father) apparently really wanted to see his grandchildren (Merl and Roberta) but I believe that he never did see them before he died. I wonder if things would have been different if James' mother (Sarah Brown) had not died when Albert was so young. ----------------------------------- 1906 Census: Banff, Alberta
