Notes
a. Note:   Bolton & District Hospital Saturday Our History The organisation has a long and rich history, which partly explains its rather strange name. It all began on the 1 December 1813 at a public meeting of the people of Little Bolton when it was agreed that a public collection be organised in order to fund Bolton's first medical dispensary. The first dispensary was opened in 1814 and eventually in 1824 the first seven bedded hospital was opened. In 1877 the 'Hospital Saturday' was charged with raising the 70,000 needed to build an Infirmary. Volunteers collected 1d from Mill Workers every Saturday morning and on the 21 July 1883 the new Infirmary was opened. The Hospital Saturday continued to fund the running of the Infirmary up to the advent of the National Health Service in 1948. Today it still supports the work of NHS Hospitals by making regular donations and raising additional money for much needed equipment and patient facilities. Most importantly the organisation now, still true to its not for profit origins, runs a cost effective Health Care Cash Plan providing a wide range of cash benefits to assist with NHS and Private medical expenses - from just 1 per week.
