Probably for only a short time as he eventually ended up in Nottinghamshire. Mark was born either 1 month (1869) or 1 year (1870) after James Pounder married Hannah Amanda Young. HOwever, Hannah gave birth to twins in May 1870 so it cannot be Hannah's child. The only theory is that Mark is a child of James but was conceived out of wedlock, possibly in an affair with Isabell, or Mark is Isabella's child from a previous relationship. It is clear that Mark is Isabella's child, though, but not so clear if Mark is the biological son of James Pounder. Since both of Hannah Young's children were born in Newcastle, it appears as though Hannah left James and went home...this may be because he got another woman pregnant and she left him?? Both Charles, Florence and Mark are the same age or fairly close in age. ------------------------- 1911 census says b. In 1871 census, he was listed as 1 year old. If he was born Jun 1869 he would be 1 year and 10 months. If born in Jun 1870, he would be only 10 months old. The census was done April 2nd and it asked for age on the day the census was done. Thus b. June 1869, he would be 1 year old in April 1871. This census does not state that Mark is a step son nor does it state his surname different from James, so at this point, I have to assume that Mark belongs to James Pounder and was an illegitimate child born probably in an unwed relationship with Isabella. It appears that he was likely in a unwed relationship with Isabella but he married Hannah in May 1869 in Lambeth, then Mark was born in Jun 1869 in Lambeth. His 2 children with Hannah were born April 1870 in Newcastle Upon Tyne (probably James and Hannah were separated by this point as James did not go to Newcastle Upon Tyne)...thus the twins likely conceived July 1869....but sometime between July 1869 and April 1871 (census time), he left Hannah and went to live with Isabella and his first son. in FreeBMD - Mark Jopling b. Mar 1869 Lambeth - not him Mark Hannant - b. Jun 1870 Bethal Green - not him Mark Holland b. Sep Quarter 1870 Lambeth ---could this be him?? There is a Mark Holland in 1901 census listed as born in London, age 30. I think that Mark Holland is not the correct person either. ---------------------- Mark Hammond Pounder died 24 Oct 1955 Hawtonville Hospital Newark Male 86 years old Bricklayer (retired) 1(a) Coronary Occlusion 1(b) Arterio Sclerosis Informant J A Pounder, son Abbey House, Netley, Southampton ---------------------------- Address at time of death: 51 Hawton Road, Newark, Nottinghamshire, England ------------------------------ 1906 Census: Banff, Alberta District #19, Calgary, Subdistrict #13, page 3, house 39 (Description: That part of the district of Calgary bounded on the east by the line between ranges 11 and 12 west of the 5th M, on the north [south] by the line between townships 29 and 30, on the west by the western boundary of the province, and on the south...) The 456 number could be from any of a number of units. Identical small numbers were issued early in the war from identical blocks of numbers given to many different units. Soldiers in the Canadian Expeditionary Force in the Great War were issued a number and retained their number as long as they remained in the CEF, unless they became commissioned officers in which cases they no longer required a number. Members of the 172nd Canadian Infantry Battalion did not serve as such "in the field" in France/Flanders as the 172nd was broken up for reinforcements when the 172nd reached England in November, 1916. Members would have retained their original number when they went on to other units in nearly every case (exceptions, such as some reinforcements to the PPCLI from 2nd Div battalions). I would suggest there is a possiblity that your relative enlisted and was given one number (likely the 456 number) and at some time was discharged and rejoined and was given a new 2nd number. I presume that you received the numbers from National Archives Canada at www.archives.ca and if so I wonder if perhaps the data base is really just two different people with identical names?
