Cannot find James in 1861 census but his parents are in Middlesborough, York 1871 Census: Bolton 16 Back Clarence Street James POUNDER H M 29 Joiner Yorkshire Stokesley Isabella POUNDER W M 22 - Yorkshire Laverton Mark H POUNDER S - 1 - Middlesex London Most records point to Mark b. 1869 not 1870, but not certain. In 1871 census, he was listed as 1 year old. If he was born Jun 1869 he would be 1 year and 10 months. If born in Jun 1870, he would be only 10 months old. The census was done April 2nd and it asked for age on the day the census was done. Thus b. June 1869, he would be 1 year old in April 1871. This census does not state that Mark is a step son nor does it state his surname different from James, so at this point, I have to assume that Mark belongs to James Pounder and was an illegitimate child born probably in an unwed relationship with Isabella. It appears that he was likely in a unwed relationship with Isabella but he married Hannah in May 1869 in Lambeth, then Mark was born in Jun 1869 in Lambeth. His 2 children with Hannah were born April 1870 in Newcastle Upon Tyne (probably James and Hannah were separated by this point as James did not go to Newcastle Upon Tyne)...thus the twins likely conceived July 1869....but sometime between July 1869 and April 1871 (census time), he left Hannah and went to live with Isabella and his first son. ------------------ Bachelor when he got married to Hannah Amanda Young. Carol phoned me last night and we talked for a long time, me taking notes which are as follows. I admit I havent yet checked out the Pounder Tree so we may already know all this. Anyway here goes Mary Ann (Polly) Duxbury, nee Pounder had the following brothers and sisters Mark Lucy Louise (Lou) Margaret (Maggie) Olive Kitty Albert Albert was father of Connie, and her brother also named Albert. But he was not recognised as her true brother. Reasons for this not known. Re James and Isabel. She does not know if they married or not. Her cousin, Norman Briscoe once said that Granny Swales had an affair with one of the wealthy owners of the house. When James and Isabel died 2 of the children lived off and on with Grandma Swales. These were Maggie who was Olive Molyneaux mother. And Polly. Some were cared for by the eldest daughter, Lucy Some were with the Chadwick Orphanage which was considered to be good and well looked after. Edna thinks Grandma Swales (as she was known) was called Mary and not Catherine. (I had asked about Catherine Swales as per the Census for 1901) Mark Hammond had done something terribly wrong and so was sent off to Canada Later he sent for 2 of his sisters to join him, Olive and Kitty Olive had 2 children with Fred Waterworth, Florence, Marjorie and Bill (that makes 3 unless she meant 2 girls) Kitty married a butcher and had 2 boys (cannot recall their names) and a girl Kathleen Mark had a son who died. Mark came back to England and turned up at Rydal Mount (Polly and Tom's house in Bolton) with his new wife called Fanny who was not at all liked by Polly. They stayed with them only a short time. She says Bill will know all about Mark as it was his mother who knew him. Bill married Bern in Banff and had 3 children. Lyne (who married Fred Pratt), Christie and Bunty Bern's great grandfather or grandfather was the first white man to see the beautiful lake which he named Louise. And at the front of the big hotel at Lake Louise is a statue of him. It is best to contact Bill Waterworth about Mark. Also, with regard to Mark she says he was very rarely mentioned and what caused him to be sent away is only speculation. She was not told what it was he had done. After taking down the above notes I opened the Pounder Tree as Carol asked me to check the name of Grandma's granny. I already thought it wasn't a Swales but wasn't sure exactly. It is Mary Ann Lee. Carol asks could this Mary be the same one Edna recalls as Grandma Swales being called Mary. Is there a connection? Or did they call her "Grandma" although she was not actually a blood relation? And how was she connected to Bolton?
