Hayward had three brothers who also lived in Brownsdale. Although they were busy with their own lives and families, they did help out. Hayward was an energetic man, he was in Marine work and often away from home for long lengths of time. Hayward had been in the British Navy in WW 1 and when WW 2 came along, he enlisted into the Merchant Marines. He did a two year hitch on the war ships and was in Singapore when Singapore fell. He was also on a guard ship, beside the "Queen Mary", when she was bomed and blow up. During WW1, Hayward signed up with his brother George, he was only 16 at the time. He worked as an Able Seaman in the Royal Navy. During the 2nd WW, Hayward worked on the Convoy Ships and their duty was to clear the sea lanes of mines and submarines, this was an extremely dangerous job. They were known as the Merchant Navy. During the wars, Hayward was awarded many medals and citations, including the "Mon`s Star".
