age 84 at time of death in 1892
The 1851 census shows him as a carpenter and joiner, aged 42, born Stourton Wilts, with wife Mary (born in Mere) and son William, born about 1831 in Mere. Mary and William also appear with him in the 1841 census, which of course doesn't state the relationships.
What interested me at this point is what happened to first wife Mary and son William. There is a death of a Mary FARTHING registered in the December quarter of 1857 in Mere district which could just be Charles's first wife. In the 1871 census there are two William Farthings of around the right age born in Mere. One of them is a 40 year old timber merchant in West Ham- he's probably the one rather than the Gentleman's Coachman aged 43. You asked about what happened to Charles John Farthing- the last record I could find of him was in a 1911 Dorset postal directory which under Gillingham has a listing on page 99 Farthing Chas Jn. farmer, Forest Side This has to be him. In a 1915 postal directory of Dorset I couldn't find him so he must have either died or moved. I tried to locate the marriage of Charles Farthing and Lydia Keats but so far have had no luck. Civil registration of marriages in England began in 1837 so it should be recorded in the marriage index. I'll keep looking! ------------------------ From John Woods [woods@inet.net.nz] Both marriages are included in the Parish Register of Mere, Wiltshire, England, FHL film number 1279350. The marriage of Charles FARTHING and Mary LAMPARD took place on 27 Dec 1830. Both parties are recorded as single and of Mere, and the marriage took place by Banns. Charles Farthing signed, while Mary Lampard made a mark. Witnesses were Harriet LAMPARD and William COWARD. The marriage is on Item 12, page 100, number 300. The marriage of Charles FARTHING and Lydia KEATES on 22 Mar 1862 is found on Item 13 of the same film, page 179, number 358. The ceremony was conducted by Charles Hy Townsend. Witnesses were Frederick Cross and Charlotte Cross. Both parties and both witnesses signed their own names. You can see that Lydia Keates signs with a clear confident hand. Have you seen her signature before? I was interested in comparing the two Charles Farthing signatures, considering the the 30 year gap between marriages. The formation of the r and F letters is slightly different, but I'm satisfied that the signatures are of the same person.
