John (named after his father) learned the tanning trade with Mr Jas. Hall of Lanark, and in 1855 moved to Paisley, Bruce County, where he ran a woolen mill. In 1871 or 1872 John's factory burned to the ground. Arson, by a competitor was suspected but never proven. At this point, John seems to have decided on a career change; he became a journalist and newspaperman. He was editor of the Paisley newspaper, the "Advocate", from 1872 -1976. In 1881 JA moved to Manitoba. John Alexander homesteaded in the Tiger Hills area near the town of Cypress River, Manitoba, which is about 30 miles north of Pilot Mound. He continued writing and newspaper work for the rest of his life. He edited the Pilot Mound "Signal" (pre-move), and founded the Pilot Mound "Sentinel" in 1889 (post move). In between, he helped to found and edit the Birtle "Observer" (1885 - 1889). Source: Database of Kathy Murdoch
