Note:   Address:<ADDR> Alder Lane San Antonio TX According to the photo o f Annie Lusty Alder standing by the grave of Charles Alder, he was buried with his daughters Mary Ann, wife of David Batters, and Amy Eliza, who died as an i nfant. PICT GB001 According to Margaret Billingsley, granddaughter of Charles and Annie Alder, who related stories told to her in a letter written to MikeAl der, February 5, 1985: "...But going back to the arrival of the family; wheng randfather Alder read Henry's letters about San Antonio, he decided to sell hi s mill business and bring the family over. I'm sure Jennie has sent you the ship's roster of 1882 listing the Alder family...There are some errors in that listing: Louisa is Emily, Emmie is Amy, Gretchen is Ethel (the 1 yr. olddaug hter of Emily), and Gideon, age 2, was on that ship, and eventually overlooked ...When the family arrived, Grandfather first bought a small house on AustinSt . near the Round House. It was what we call a shot-gun house--3 rooms, onerig ht behind the other. Dad asked me to take him to see it once more before he d ied. When I saw the inside, I asked him how in the world they all slept. He s aid there was a loft, and his father built an outside stairway, where allthe b oys slept. The kitchen was big enough for cooking, eating, and sleeping, on a couple of cots. He soon invested his money in a block of land on Dignowitty Hill, which we called the 'Alder Block'. He built most of the houses(about 2 0), for selling and renting, and sold the remaining lots to railroad men. He made an alley thru the middle, on which he built his own home, and asmall rent house on either side. The alley is called Alder Lane on our city map. He mus t have had a good business head on him; notwithstanding, he could have bought a block on Houston St. downtown for about the same money! " Excerpts from a L etter to Jennie (Roberts) from Margaret Billingsley, p. 2: "...grandfather le ft soemthing in his will to his two sons, Henry and Arthur, and toone daughter , Aunt Lena. I think that was because her husband, William cowles weresuch bu ddies. I remember seeing them sitting together on the long backporch, drinking beer. I don't think they drank too much, but they were greatfriends." Abstr act of Chas.
