The following family history also appears with two pictures. Preston, Robert and Isabelle by Noreen Paterson Robert, February 24 1836-July 31, 1916, married Isabelle Atkinson, 1841-1917 in 1861. Among the earliest settlers to come to the Pilot Mound district in 1878 were Robert Preston (R.S.), his brother Richard, and Richard's two sons Thomas Charles (T.C.) and Leonard. They filed on homesteads in waht is now the Goudney district on sections 17-3-11, 18-3-11, and 13-3-12. Before winter they built log-thatched homes for their families and in December, R.S. and Richard headed back east to Halton and Bruce Counties in Ontario. In April 1879 they arrived back with their young families, also accompanied by three older nephews, Thomas, Bert and James. R.S.'s family consisted of two small boys Sylvester and Eugene. A third son, Edgar, was born in March 1880 - reportedly the first white boy born in the district. In 1879 the Prestons built and operated a grist mill, and saw mill on the south east quarter of section 13-3-12 on the bank of the creek. Near the mills a store was opened which also served as the Post Office. This settlement of Preston's was not destined to prosper for long. In 1881 the two mills burned down. Later the saw mill was replaced. But when the railroad came through in 1885 the two sesttlements of Preston and Pilot Mound on the "Old Mound" were transferred to the present site of Pilot Mound. By the early 1900's all the Prestons except R.S. and Isabelle and their son Edgar had left the district and scattered west from Carnduff, SK to British Columbia and Nebraska. R.S. died on his original homestead in 1916 and his wife, the following year. In 1905 Edgar married Harriet (Hattie) Balfour (1880), another early settler who came to the Cooperfield district from Ontario in the spring of 1881 at the age of six months. They lived on the original Preston homestead until they retired to Stanley Avenue in Pilot Mound in 1945. Edgar died in 1963 and his wife in 1971. They had five children; twins, Mervil and Arthur (1908), Isabelle (1912), and a second pair of twins, Elmer and Earle (1916). Mervil, who lived on SE 18-3-11 W married Bessie Mathers (1909), daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Mathers. They retired to Stanley Avenue in Pilot Mound. Mervil died in 1976, and Bessie died in 1981. They had two children, Lorne (1943), and Noreen (1948). Noreen married Brian Murray (1943) from Edwin, MB in 1969. They had two boys Brent (1972) and Mark (1973). They were divorced. Noreen married Lloyd Paterson (see James and Mabel Paterson history) Arthur married Jean Fraser (1912), daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Fraser of Floral in 1942. Arthur died in 1981. Jean lives in Winnipeg. They had three children: John (1945), Dory (1947), and Alison (1949). Dory died in 1991. Dory had two sons Max (1972) and Zeke (1974), who now live in B.C. John and Alison live in Winnipeg. Alison works for the Post Office. Isabelle lives in Prairie View Lodge, Pilot Mound. Elmer married Mable McConnell (1908), daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Tom McConnell of Sarles, N.D. in 1948. Earle, who lived on the old homestead, married Sadie Taylor (1907), daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jack Taylor, in 1943. Earle served in the Canadian Air Force in World War II. They returned to farm 17-3-11 until they retired to Moffat Street, Pilot Mound. Earle died in 1986. Sadie lives in Prairie View Lodge, Pilot Mound. They have one son Bob (1952), who lives in Winnipeg. Bob works in the office equipment industry. One picture includes Mervil, Arthur, Elmer, Earle, Edgar, Harriet and Isabelle. The other includes Lorna (Sanburn) and Lorne Preston, Patricia (Preston) and Robert Chuckrey, Trystain Chuckrey, Alice Sanburn and Payton Chuckrey, Heather (Preston) and Chris Hildebrandt. I know there is an earlier history book of Pilot Mound area called Echoes of the Past but I have not been able to get a copy.
