Grandfather. Ray Preston, still living in Keremeos, B.C., remembers his father, my Gt. Uncle (Hugh) Richard Preston, helping put the coffin on the train. Richard was listed as a widower in the 1891 census. I suspect his wife Annie died sometime between 1881 and 1891 and perhaps never left Pilot Mound but I couldn't find her grave there. Richard's son T.C. Preston had a later second marriage to Alice Brooking in Vancouver and listed his mother's name as Annie Sophia Myers of Nova Scotia. Possibly the name Chappel came from her family (Leonard Chappel Preston). Richard and Burt both had homestead claims in the North Battleford district, however Richard was listed as living with Burt's family. Burt supposedly had a store for a while in Turtleford or Spruce Grove. My grandfather Earl Burton's birth certificate gives Emmaville, Saskatchewan as his birthplace 27 Nov. 1909. Richard's eldest son Leonard died in Pilot Mound on 1 Jan. 1879 from typhoid and is buried near Richard, although someone wrote him in the cemetary listing as Leonard Chappel, not as a Preston. There was a separate single headstone that says Preston meant to cover them all I suppose. There was only one Catherine, full name Catherine Cordelia, born in April 1859 who married Hector McFayden (McFadden) born about 1851. She was last seen in Pilot Mound census in 1901. Hector had died between 1891 and 1901. Janet (Jeanette) Long may have lived in Winnipeg, there has been some mention of Long cousins there. Can't say where I heard that, perhaps my mother. Mom and I both wish we had asked more questions when we had the chance. I've never found anything about Mary Ellen except that she married a McNeil. After that is my Richard Burton. He was born in Greenock, Ontario where Richard lived for at least 7 years before moving to Pilot Mound. My grandfather said his mother died when he was 2 so I estimate Mary Lush died around 1911 somewhere around Emmaville, Sask. She was born 31 Jan. 1868 in Eramosa, Ontario. Next was Phoebe Jane born 27 June 1871 in Greenock, Ont. and finally was William Calvin born 16 April 1875 in Greenock. William Calvin also had a homestead in the Battleford area, but I don't know what happened to him or any marriage, etc. My grandfather mentioned an Uncle Willy, perhaps that's him. He also mentioned a brother Willy who died before he was born. I found William on the unusual 1906 census aged 1. It's online at automatedgenealogy.com/census under 1906, Manitoba, Lisgar under "Bert" Preston. I see you have more information on him than I had, however he was possibly born in Sask. John Wallbank Preston also had a homestead but whether he was Richard's brother or a later generation I don't know.
