a. Note:   There is another baptism record for a James to William & Mary BUGDEN on 8 Jul 1821. It could the same person as the 1819 baptism was "Priv(y)".
  Cemetery headstone in Petley says b. Jan 1819 d. Oct 3, 1893. Therefore the 2 baptisms must be the same James, with one being a private baptism and the other one(s) being public baptisms.

  Matthews (1971) traced the origin of Bugdens in Newfoundland to Dorset and Hampshire in England. There were Budgens in Trinity Bay in the late 18th century. Church records show a Sarah Bugden in Trinity in 1772, a William Bugden of the same place in 1784, and a John Bugden of English Harbour in 1799. The first record of a Bugden on Random Island is of a Joseph Bugden of Rider's Harbour in 1814. The original Bugdens in Petley belonged to the one primary family, namely, James Bugden and Elizabeth (nee Jestigan) Bugden. James and Elizabeth were married at Trinity in 1843 and they had eight sons (Arthur, Benjamin, Heber, James, Jesse, John, Walter and William) and one daughter, Mary. Some of their children were born in Trinity, while others were born in Petley after the family had settled there in the 1850s. Records show that one of their sons, James, was born in Trinity in 1857, while another son, Heber, was born in Lance Cove in 1858, and a third son, Benjamin, was born in Upper Lance Cove in 1865. At one time, a James Bugden appears in written records as residing in Middle Lance Cove, But as noted above, the Bugdens in Middle Lance Cove were descendants of a William Bugden who was earlier reported as residing in Upper Lance Cove.
