Notes
a. Note:   Elkanah enlisted as a private to serve in the Revolution in Feb. 1776 in Capt. Oliver Soper’s Co., Col. Read’s Reg’t of the Mass. Line. In November 1776 he was taken prisoner by the British and imprisoned in New York 7 weeks. According to family legend, at the end of the war Elkanah and a man named Snow walked home from Philadelphia, PA to Orleans, MA a distance of over 200 miles. Elkanah was on the pension list when it was established. He was later dropped because a property exclusion rule was thought to effect him. In 1823 he appealed to have the pension reestablished. At that time he affirmed that he was a laborer in poor health with a weak constitution and that he had been confined to his home for 4 years. His wife Sarah was 63 years old and also in poor health. Living in his household was his daughter Miriam, 30 years old, and her daughter. Miriam’s husband was in State Prison for life. Abigail, Lydia, Olive, Joseph, and Dean Grey were also in his household and dependants on him. He had sold all of his real estate to John Doane to pay his debts, and needed the pension to exist. His pension was reestablished. Wynn, pa. 26
