Note: Lorenzo joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in 1833 and was a follower of James J. Strang. (After the death of Joseph Smith) bith he and Sarah were part of the Mormon colony on Beaver Island. Their first child was born there. After being driven off Beaver Island they lived in Wisconsin for a time, but they were threatened and driven out to localities there. In 1866 they had settled in Coldwater, Michigan where Lorenzo's brother, the Rev. Mannaseh Hickey, was a pastor of the Methodist Episcopal church. There Lorenzo became a farmer. When Lorenzo moved to Coldwater it was with two wives and twelve children. One wife, Mrs. Francis Miller Hickey, posed as an aunt, and lived with her children in a separate house. Her children were Mariette, George, and Abraham Mark. She supported herself by taking care of sick people. In the other household were Lorenzo, Sarah (Linnell), and their children: Elvira E., Jared M., Jessie, John, Ma___, Zilpha A., Lorenzo D., Matthew L.D., Olive Ruth. Another child, Joseph, has also been mentioned. There may have been others unknown to us. The Mormon "Sealing" was performed by Samuel P. Bacon on Beaver Island. By his first wife, Ann Davis, Lorenzo had also had three children but these were not with him. The oldest was by now married. His fourth wife had died in childbirth. (Wynn, Pa. 339) Lorenzo D. His wife, Sarah Ann Hickey, was one of the more influential women on Beaver Island. His granddaughter’s husband still holds priesthood in the church today.
