Elmer had a large dairy farm. He was an honest, hard-working farmer. Hazel was the prettiest of the Grayum girls. She was pretty even into her old age. She was a wonderful hostess and cook. She was a member of Eastern Star. Hazel went to high school in Neodesha, Kansas, where her brother, Professor William Grayum was the principal. When she graduated, her father, Charles W. Grayum went to the commencement exercises and accompanied her afterward to their home in Jones, Oklahoma. After she graduated, Hazel taught school in Geary, Oklahoma, boarding with her "Aunt" Lyda (Carter) Brand, who was really an older 1st cousin once removed. In 1918, Hazel acquired a teaching position at Jones Schools. She taught 1st-3rd grades in the three room school located on the present site of Jones High School on Hawaii. Helen Craig taught 4th-6th grades and the principal, Mr. Mosier, taught 7th and 8th grades. Freda Tilller, sister of Elmer, was in the 4th grade there at the time. When the new school was built, this three room school building was removed and is currently (2014) a rental house located on the south east side of the railroad tracks on 4th Street in Jones.
