a. Note:   e orchard. He grew up on a farm in Nebraska on the Nemaha-Richardson county line. The family moved to Oklahoma about 1900, and he attended Normal School in Edmond where he met Edna Grayum. Later he worked on the railroad, usually as a brakeman but also as a conductor until they discovered that he was color blind. About 1945 Charlie and Edna bought an avocado orchard in La Habra with Jim and Irene (Koontz) Reid, and built two houses on top of the hill. The grandchildren all remember "The Ranch" with great fondness. One of Charlie's greatest pleasures was having all of the family over for week-end breakfasts, which he cooked on the grill on the patio.
Edna was raised in Gallipolis, OH, until she was 12, when the decision was made to move to Oklahoma where the land was better, and it might be possible for the children to attend school regularly and even go to college. When they first arrived in Oklahoma, they farmed on the shares, and the three older children earned money picking cotton. The family earned enough money to buy a farm and then send the children to Normal School. Edna met Charlie Koontz at Normal School in Edmond, and later she taught school for two years before they were able to marry. After their marriage they stayed in Jones near the family for several years, but after other members of the family moved to Colorado, they followed to Alamosa, where Charlie got work on the railroad. In 1928 they moved on to California, staying with Edna's Uncle Harvey until they could get a place of their own.
During the Depression times were hard for the Koontzes, just as for everyone else. Everyone in the family who was old enough worked. When times got better everyone in the family who wanted to, went to college. After all the children left home, Edna occupied her time taking creative writing classes and researching the family genealogy. She wrote many of the family traditions in story form as well as attempting some novel-length works. Her stories of her own childhood and the story she wrote about Emma (Ames) Koontz's journey are treasured by the family.
Charlie and Edna were 8th cousins through Robert Lovell. Charlie descends from Robert's son John, and Edna descends from Robert's daughter Agnes. In all, they descend from at least 18 pairs of cousins of various degrees who married. Through his mother's side, Charlie descended from Mayflower passengers William White, Stephen Hopkins, and Edward Fuller.
