a. Note:   y. According to the History of Gallia County, G. D. Hebard took over the Gallipolis Dispatch from J. L. Waller sometime in the late 1850's or early 1860's. It lasted until 1868. George D. Hebard started another paper, The Locomotive, in 1871, changed the name to the Gallipolis Ledger, under which name his son James H. Hebard took it over. For many years George's brother-in-law John Quincy Walker was the typesetter.
  Obituary from The Gallipolis Bulletin, 4 Feb 1880: Mr. George D. Hebard died last Thursday night at 12 o'clock, at his residence in this city. His disease was of the lungs and liver, his right lung being nearly entirely gone. Mr. Hebard was born in Athens, O., April 20th, 1827. He learned the printing business with Mr. William Nash, in the Gallipolis Journal office. He founded and published for several years the Jackson (O.) Standard; he published the Lawrenceburg (Ind.) Register, in connection with George Lane; he published the Gallipolis Dispatch from 1857 until the nomination of Vallandigham in 1863; he published The Gallipolis Bulletin in 1871. Since 1873 he has been engaged in the printing business in Gallipolis, and was so engaged at the time of his death. At intervals between the publication of the papers named, he was engaged in merchandizing in this county, at Ashland, Ky., and at Pomeroy, O. He leaves a wife, four daughters and two sons. His funeral took place last Sunday, February 1, from his late residence, and was conducted by the Masonic fraternity. Mr. Hebard was an invalid for some time before his death, but was only confined to his room and bed about two weeks. All that loving hands and affection could do was done to render his last days comfortable, and he died surrounded by his immediate family and relatives.
