a. Note:   , and attended the Academy until 30 Jun 1831, three years. He had to leave due to a deficiency in Mathematics. Later he studied medicine in Philadelphia, Ohio and Kentucky. After his second marriage they moved to New Madrid, MO, where he practiced medicine. He served in the Missouri State Legislature in 1848-9.
  After daughter Allison died at the age of nine, the family decided to move to Texas and join Jones relatives. During the Civil War, James served in the Confederate Army at Halletsville. He was a Captain and later a Colonel of the 2nd Regt., Texas Mounted Rifles, Co. D. After the War, he became a merchant in Hallettsville.
  He was living with his son William Bailey in Austin, Travis Co., TX, on the 1880 census. Lois Walker thinks he may have died there in Austin. He is definitely not buried in Hallettsville.
