Note: N179 [In ink added upper right corner of clipping "Died Dec. 26, 1954"] Merritt Allen, Bristol Author of Historical Novels for Boys, Dies Merritt P. Allen, 62, author of books for boys, died unexpectedly Dec. 26 at his home in Bristol. Allen, who was stricken with polio when he was 17, was self-educated and wrote more than 23 historical novels for boys. He was also the author of short stories and radio and television scripts. Allen said his historical novels were written for older boys, but he had won high praise from critics, librarians and readers and his books had been the favorite of girls and adults as well. Many of them were translated into foreign languages. A long-time friend of Prof. Leon Dean of the University of Vermont, who is also a historical novelist, Allen was born in Bristol July 2, 1892, the son of Ralla (sic) E. and Gertrude Parmelee Allen. His forebears came to Bristol about 125 years ago from Connecticut. He moved from the 107-year-old family home about five years ago and had since lived at "The Maples," the old Parmelee farm. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at 2 P. M. at his late home, "The Maples," with Rev. H. Barton VanVliet, pastor of the Baptist Church officiating. The bearers were Allen Grant, Frederick and Glenn Jackman, Wilfred Brown, Donald Bell and John Kilbourn. Interment was in Greenwood Cemetery where Mr. VanVliet gave the committal services.
