Note: N317 http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=28815728 Created by: MHB Record added: Aug 06, 2008 Find A Grave Memorial# 28815728 [1 June 2016 Susan Hopkins submitted date of month for his birth date and some of the links from his children's pages to him and wife Sarah] "Solomon S. Drake passed away on Tuesday morning, June 8, 1926, at this late home in Wooster, Ohio, at the advanced age of 84 years. For a year he had bravely and uncomplainingly fought the unequal battle with a complication of diseases, resulting from an attack of grippe. All that skillful and faithful medical attention could do, seconded by the tender and efficient care of his children could not overcome the ravage of disease. There was the longing for recovery but the quiet resignation to the will of God. Mr. Drake was born at Bedford, Ohio, on his father's farm April 10, 1842. He was the son of Alonzo Drake, a Bedford pioneer and Sarah Parmalee. He received his education in the village school and at the early age of 17 entered Hiram college, of which ex-Preident Garfield was then president. On May 3, 1865 he was married to Sarah Smith Barlow of Bristol, Vermont, after which they came to the old homestead farm at Beford, where they lived for forty-eight years. Mrs. Drake, always a cheerful, loyal wife and mother, passed away three years ago. Mr. Drake has long been associated with the Church of Christ in Bedford, uniting with that fellowship Feb. 28, 1869. He was a Civil War veteran belonging to Company A, 103rd Ohio Regiment, O.V.I. Besides looking after his farm he was always active in the business world, one of the oldest stockholders in the Union Trust Co., always interested in the political and economic condition of our country and was even to his death a great reader. He was a real example of a true, loyal American citizen, whose loss to the community cannot be estimated. His youth was surrounded by the sternness and ruggedness of puritanism and these were the ideals he taught his children. He leaves an undying legacy of holy influence, wherefore we ae comforted and await th blessed reunion on the other shore. After retiring from their farm Mr. and Mrs. Drake moved to Wooster, Ohio, where they spent their summers, but many winters were spent in Vermont among old relatives and friends. The surviving members of the family are two sons: Edwin B. Drake of North Baltimore, O.; Alonzo Drake, who lives on the old farm and three daughter, Mrs. Walter E. Painter, Mary J. and Sarah E. Drake of Wooser; eight grandchildren and one sister, Mrs. Emma D. Wheeler of Paulding, O. Funeral services were conducted at the Wooster home Wednesday, June 9, by Professor J. G. Black of Wooster College, after which the body was taken to the old home at Bedford according to his expressed desire. There, among his life-long friends and neighbors final services were held on June 11, conducted by Dr. J. H. Goldner, pastor of the Euclid avenue Church of Christ."
