Obituary clipping with no date or source, but with photo: Broadcast pioneer dies Athens_ Broadcast pioneer Fred A. Palmer, 90, of Athens, chairman of the board of WATH, Inc., died Thursday evening, March 30, 1995, at O"Bleness Memorial Hospital after a week-long illness. Mr. Palmer started working in radio in 1929 in Columbus as "Neighbor Palmer", the farm reporter for WAIU-AM, located in what is now the Leveque Tower. A short time later, he was named generals manager and operated the station successfully throughout the Great Depression. Later, he was associated with the Wolfe family in Columbus in establishing the WBNS stations, and subsequently helped Murrey Lincoln begin what is today known as Nationwide Communications. He began WRED and also was vice president and general manager of KOY in Phoenix and WCKY in Cincinnati. In 1943, he founded the Fred A. Palmer Co. and became the broadcast industry's first sales and marketing consultant, helping stations throughout North America. Sales and Marketing Executives Club International rated him among the top three public speakers in the nation. In 1973, he purchased WATH AM and FM in Athens from Irene Kovlan, widow of WATH founder Andy Kovlan. The Palmer family continues to own and operate the stations. In recent years, Mr. Palmer was probably best known for his radio commentaries, which he began in 1974. He wrote and voiced every one of the nearly 6,000 commentaries. Ohio University's F. W. Scripps School of Journalism published a book titled "Just Thought You'd Like to Know," Palmer's signature phrase, which features a collection of those commentaries. Among honors Mr. Palmer received were the Ohio Association of Broadcasters Distinguished Service Award and induction into the National Association of Broadcasters group. He was born July 22, 1904, in Van Wert, son of the late Joseph and Emma Bowers Palmer. He attended Ohio Northern University in Ada two years and the College of Wooster tow years. He later was a trustee of Ohio Northern. He and his wife of 60 years, Miriam, moved to Athens in July 1994 from Worthington, where they had lived for nearly 50 years. In addition to his wife, Mr. Palmer is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Carol and Bob Lambert, and a son and daughter-in-law, Dave and Pat, all of Athens; a sister, Edith Stump of Worthington; seven grandchildren, and two great grandchildren. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by 12 siblings. Funeral arrangements are incomplete."
