Prisoner of War records show that he was captured Apr. 9, 1865 at Blakely, AL; transfered from Ship Island, Miss., to Vicksburg, Miss., May 1, 1865. He was received at Camp Townsend, May 6, 1865 on parole for exchange. John applied for a pension Sept. 14, 1925. It was approved Sept. 28, 1925. He stated that he lived at Box 142, Bremond, Texas., Robertson Co. He said he had lived in Texas for about 49 years. APPLICATION FOR MORTURARY WARRENT, JOHN T. Allison, father-in-law, Memphis, Hall Co., Texas. 62nd Alabama Infantry Regiment The 62nd Alabama Infantry Regiment was organized at Mobile in March, 1865, having changed designation from the 1st Regiment of Reserves, and using Lockhart's Battalion as a nucleus (Lockhart's Battalion was organized in Selma, January 1864.) The new regiment was first stationed at Fort Gaines and was in the bombardment of that place, losing several killed and wounded, and the remainder captured. Prisoners were taken to New Orleans and to Ship Island. They were exchanged in Mobile Bay, 4 Jan 1865 and placed in the garrison of Spanish Fort as part of Thomas' Brigade (along with the 63rd Alabama). They then withstood the siege there for six days with some loss until relieved by Holtzclaw's Brigade. The regiment continued to serve throughout the siege and following bombardment of Fort Blakely, losing a number killed and wounded, until it was captured in the final assault. Taken to Ship Island, the men were exchanged in time to be surrendered with the Department of Alabama, Mississippi and East Louisiana, 4 May 1865. The regiment was composed wholly of young men, and they were complimented in special orders by Gen'l St. John Lidell for their conduct at Spanish Fort. Field officers: Col. Daniel Huger (Mobile); Lt. Cols. James L. Davidson (Bibb, until reorganized); and Brunot Yniestre (captured at Blakely); and Majors Brunot Yniestre (Mobile, promoted); J. W. Pitts (Shelby, captured at Blakely). J.T. Nov. 20, 1935 Texas Pioneer Passes Away-John Thomas Hill, 91 years of age & a resident of Texas for the past 55 years died in a local hospital this morning about 3 o'clock, following an illness of 2 year's duration. Funeral services for the aged man, who had lived with a daughter, Mrs. J.I. Allison, 4 miles west of Memphis, for the past 10 years, are being conducted this afternoon at the First Baptist Church by Rev. O.K. Webb, pastor. Interment will be in the Fairview Cemetery with King's Mortuary in charge. At the time of his death, Mr. Hill had been confined to his bed for 12 months. The deceased was the father of 18 children, 12 of whom survive. He had 37 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren; & 5 great-great-grandchildren. His surviving children are Mrs. J.I. Allison, Memphis; Arthur Hill, Lakeview; W.W. Hill, Baldwyn Park, Calif.; Mrs. John Lomax, Franklin, Texas; Mrs. Pickney Wootan, Hammond, Texas; Walter Hill, Buenas Aires, South American; Hill, Longview, Gene Hill, Baldwyn Park, Calif; Jay Hill, Texas; Mrs. Christine , Los Angeles, Calif; Miss Francis Olga Hill, Baldwyn Park, Calif; Miss Lear Hill, Amarillo. Mr. Hill was born in GA. & moved to Texas . He fought in the Civil War Confederate soldier. He was a member of the Mississippi church. The missing areas are where part of the paper was missing. It is believed that he had a 160 acre farm a few miles from north of Bremont Texas.
